Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing on Wheels

At 5.9km, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest standing mountain in S.A. and the highest standing mountain in the world. As this mountain finds its existence close to the equator, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is even possible on wheels. It's a whole new concept and not many bikers have made it successfully to the Summit.

An Overview of Biking Routes

Biking Kilimanjaro is not possible on all routes. Only two distinct routes are allowed to be bicycled the Shira and Kilema routes. Those who come on Kilimanjaro trekking also lean into an option of mountain bicycles to reach Uhuru. Cycling can also be done on other routes but only to an extent. After that their cycles have to be carried by porters to and forth the peak.

  • The Shira Route

It’s a short two to three days route which is used purposely for a mini biking experience on Kilimanjaro. People also do it to acclimatize their body for the 6 day Uhuru peak summit jaunt. The route begins from the Londorossi gate at 2100m & ends in 3 days.

  • The Kilema Route

This route goes parallel with the Marangu route. This route is the road for vehicles to give supplies till the Horombo hut and to attend any medical emergency from the same place. The route for bicycling is 4by4 gravel road in a healthy condition. This route connects with Marangu from Horombo hut to the summit. People even complete 90% of the way cycling and depend completely on one’s fitness level and skills to some extent.
